在日常生活中,每天24小时的概念已经深入人心。实际上,这只是一个假设的数字,我们称它为平均太阳时间(mean solar time)或者是标准时间(universal time,ut.)。有了这个理论上的系统,人类便可以有规律地过日子。这个假设,成为心目中的真实。
其实,要是严格地计算百分之几秒,那一年365天中每天的长短都是不同的。记绿这种时间方式的系统,叫做真实太阳时间(real solar time)。每一天的长度计算,是太阳连续两次通过观察点最高之处之间的确实时间。或者用最简单的语言说,就是两次日照没有影子之间的那时间。一年中最短的一天,只有23小时44分钟;而最长的一天,则长达到达24小时14分钟,每天的长短,根据地球与太阳的距离而确定。与太阳的距离短,地球自转一天的时间就短,与太阳距离远,地球自转一天的时间就长。地球围绕着太阳转的一年轨迹,画在图上像一枚肾脏,其中只有四天与假设的圆周轨迹相交。如果三几秒忽略不计,那等于说,这四天我们可以真正地拥有24小时,它们是4月16日、6月14日,9月1日以及圣诞节。
在时钟尚未普及的日子里,真实太阳时间主导了我们的生活。中国人的“日出而作,日入而息”,是太阳时间的生活影响。而沿用日久晷,则是真实太阳时间的具体指示,日出日落,在日晷表面上留下了不同方位的影子。在瑞士巴赛尔的一家大教堂的外塥上,装设了一个巨型的日晷和一个同样大小的时钟。阳光普照时,可以清楚地看到两种时间的对比。对钟表有兴趣的人,看了当会发出会心微笑。
但在阴天,或者在晚上,日晷不灵光,真实太阳时间没有了意义,甚至无法得知当时的真实太阳时间。于是人们想出了办法,先计算出全年每天的真实太阳时间,再参考时钟指示的时间,得出当天的具体差异。这个时间判别数字,称之为时间差(equation of time),计算公式是当天的有真实太阳时间减平均太阳时间(即24小时)。在本文的最后一段有一个俯表,列出全年的时间差,读者们可以据此计算每天的真实太阳时间。不过,以记忆下365个不同的数字,大概神童也未必优而为之。于是,人们就用复杂有机械把它在钟表上显示出来,避免大脑的操劳。最先将时间差功能装在袋表上的,是英国人苏利(henry sully)。不过,更精确更实用的装置是制表大师a.l 宝玑的发明。自18世纪末起,他和她的传人做了不少具备时间差装置的袋表,精确度以分钟为单位,成为给后人的珍贵遗产。今日,这些袋表在拍卖会不时可见到,成交价动机百万港元以上。

今日,已经共有四五个品牌推出了时间差腕表。它的宝性,应该说已经得到肯定了。起码,这项功能会很对复杂腕表爱好者或收藏家的胃口。不过,现代作品中将时间差概念发挥得最淋漓尽致的,还是百达翡庇的袋表star caliber2000.它装有活动的真宝太阳时间分针,成为与太阳同步运动的精密机械。它可以指示出无须计算的即时间,还可以凭两枝同轴分针的距离指示出当天的时间差。谁都无法否认,这是时间艺术的又一次生华。希望,这一功能终于有一天在腕表上出现。
