国外现代化隧道窑已不采用(或不直接采用)固体燃料，也基本不使用液体燃料(重油或柴油)，而几乎全部采用气体燃料(石油液化气、煤气和天然气)。在21世纪初期，我国台商及港商在大陆兴办的数百家陶瓷企业也几乎全部采用石油液化气燃料;而我国内陆企业采用气体燃料窑炉比例还相当小，大部分还是煤窑。有的工厂旧窑改造或建新窑仍按煤窑设计。我国的陶瓷展品屡或世界大奖，但批量生产质量不稳定，这与使用煤的质量难以稳定有关。最近随着政策的改变以及西气东输的大规模推进，越来越多的企业采用天然气作为燃料。
