去 new york 出差的 jim，在餐厅和老美同事用餐，结账时候，同事问服务员 do you take plastic 当服务员回答 yes 时，jim 以为他会取塑料袋来打包，只见同事拿出信用卡来付款。
原来 plastic 指的是 credit card，信用卡，不是塑料袋。
do you take plastic 这句话在美国很常用，意思是「你们收信用卡吗？」在超市买东西结账时，也常听收银员问 cash or plastic 这是问「付现或信用卡」，相当于 cash or charge 而不是问你要不要塑料袋。
plastic 原意是塑料，中文有塑料货币一说，英文也说 plastic money，或简化成 plastic，包括信用卡、金融卡。结账时服务员随意一点会问 cash or plastic（现金或信用卡？）正式一点则说 do you want to pay with cash or plastic（您想付现或信用卡结账？）
可以怎么回答呢？
我付现。
（x）ill pay by cash.
（o）ill pay in cash.
注意，付现用 in cash 而不是 by cash。
记在帐上，意思就是信用卡付款。
（x）ill charge.
（o）ill charge it.
（o）ill put it on plastic, thanks.（信用卡付，谢谢！）
以信用卡付用 charge 这个动词，它的意思是「把某个东西记在帐上」。这某个东西用 it 来代替，不可省略。
再看一个例句：please charge drinks to my room.
在饭店酒吧消费，请服务员把账单记在住房费用上，经常用的一句话，意思是饮料费用退房时再一起结清的意思。
身上只有信用卡，没带现金，可以说 i dont carry any cash, just plastic.
plastic 除了当信用卡之外，还有「人工化的」意思。所以「整容手术」英文说plastic surgery。
用 plastic 形容人，就有不自然、假假的意思：he looks plastic.（他看起来很不自然，脸假假的。）
