gmt就是时，格林尼治所在地的标准时间。现在不光是天文学家使用格林尼治时间，就是在新闻报刊上也经常出现这个名词。我们知道各地都有各地的地方时间。如果对国际上某一重大事情，用地方时间来记录，就会感到复杂不便．而且将来日子一长容易搞错。因此，天文学家就提出一个大家都能接受且又方便的记录方法，那就是以格林尼治的地方时间为标准。
gmt 标准时间：
格林尼治标准时间是指位于伦敦郊区的皇家格林尼治天文台的标准时间，因为本初子午线被定义在通过那里的经线。 理论上来说，格林尼治标准时间的正午是指当太阳横穿格林尼治子午线时的时间。由于地球在它的椭圆轨道里的运动速度不均匀，这个时刻可能和实际的太阳时相差16分钟。 地球每天的自转是有些不规则的，而且正在缓慢减速。所以，格林尼治时间已经不再被作为标准时间使用。现在的标准时间协调时（utc）由原子钟提供。 自1924年2月5日开始，格林尼治天文台每隔一小时会向全发放调时信息。
由来
由于地球轨道并非圆形，其运行速度又随着地球与太阳之间的距离改变而出现变化，因此视太阳时欠缺均匀性。视太阳日的长度同时亦受到地球自转轴相对轨道面的倾斜度所影响。为了要纠正上述的不均匀性，天文学家计算出地球非圆形轨迹与极轴倾斜对视太阳时的效应。平太阳时就是指经修订后的视太阳时。在格林尼治子午线上的平太阳时称为时(ut0)，又叫格林尼治平时(gmt)。
北京时间与gmt时间关系

greenwich standard time refers to the standard time of the royal greenwich observatory in the outskirts of london as meridian is defined through the warp there. in theory, the midday of greenwich standard time is the time when the sun crosses the greenwich meridian. due to the uneven motion of the earth in its elliptical orbit, this moment may differ from the actual sun for 16 minutes. the earth's daily rotation is somewhat irregular and slowly slowing down. so gmt is no longer used as a standard time. the standard time now-coordinated universal time (utc)-is provided by atomic clocks. since february 5, 1924, the greenwich observatory will distribute the timing information to the world every one hours.
